Clay Handy

Idaho House of Representatives
District 27

You can say leadership runs in the family. Clay’s grandfather and great grandfather were in the state legislature. It only made sense to follow in their footsteps. “If you’re going to live in a community, it’s your responsibility to make it better.”

With six children, 20 grandkids, and one on the way, leaving a legacy might already be a done deal, but Clay would love to keep his family in Idaho. “The quality of life we have in Idaho is far above and beyond most states by leaps and bounds.”

He is seeing warning signs in the wake of Idaho’s restrictive law however — and alarm in everyone from his constituents to healthcare facilities to personal relationships. The law is making many nervous with impending threats of everything from skyrocketing insurance premiums to fear of personal prosecution.

“It should just be something that works for our community and the standards of our community. And every time I looked over there during the session, there’s somebody coming in with some new ideas from who knows where, and you’re just kind of going: What the heck? Where do these guys come from? Don’t they have a real job somewhere that they can go do so that we can just work on our own legislation?”
